What this test analyzes

Stress load

Recovery debt
Estimates how much recovery is lacking relative to consumption: non-restorative sleep, ineffective breaks, insufficient decompression, and compensatory behaviors.
Cognitive overload
Assesses attention fragmentation, task switching, decision density, and information complexity that increase cognitive load and slow recovery.

Why this test exists

Slow recovery after mental effort isn’t just “being tired.” It’s often the result of a combination of factors: a stress load that remains active even after the task is over, insufficient recovery accumulated over time, and a level of cognitive complexity (decisions, interruptions, ambiguity) that exceeds your capacity to regulate it.

This test doesn’t measure “how strong you are” or “how motivated you are.” It’s designed to identify patterns that make recovery inefficient: physiological signals, compensatory behaviors, and work/life conditions that keep your system in alert mode.

What it assesses (3 required axes)

  • Stress load (axis_stress_load): how often your system stays activated (tension, urgency, hypervigilance), and how quickly it returns to baseline.
  • Recovery debt (axis_recovery_debt): how much recovery you’re “missing” compared to what you expend (sleep, breaks, decompression, emotional recovery).
  • Cognitive overload (axis_cognitive_overload): how much mental complexity you’re handling (multitasking, context switching, decisions, informational noise), and what it costs you.

How to interpret the result

The result is not a diagnosis. It’s a probability map that helps you understand where to intervene: reduce load, increase recovery, or redesign how you manage attention.

In particular, slow recovery tends to emerge when:

  • stress load is high and doesn’t switch off after the task;
  • recovery debt is chronic (even with “enough sleep”);
  • cognitive overload is high (too many decisions, too many interruptions, too many open variables).

Typical signs (not always obvious)

  • Post-task inertia: you finish a mental task and stay “shut down” or irritable for hours.
  • Apparent recovery: you distract yourself (scrolling, snacks, videos), but your mind stays active and doesn’t recharge.
  • Decision fatigue: after many micro-decisions, even simple things start to feel heavy.
  • Internal noise: rumination, replaying conversations, anticipating problems.
  • Mild somatization: neck tension, a clenched jaw, shallow breathing, “screen” headaches.

When it makes sense to take this test

  • If, after studying or doing mentally demanding work, you need many hours (or a full day) to feel clear-headed again.
  • If you alternate between productivity peaks and crashes that are hard to predict.
  • If rest doesn’t “sink in”: you sleep but don’t feel restored.
  • If you notice your attention has become fragile (interruptions, distractions, irritability).

Method note

The questions are designed to capture recurring patterns over the past 2–4 weeks. Answer based on your actual frequency, not how it “should” be. If you’re going through an exceptional period (illness, bereavement, moving), keep in mind that the profile may mainly reflect that phase.

Frequently asked questions

Does slow recovery mean I have a clinical problem?
Not necessarily. Slow recovery is a functional signal: it indicates that, given how load, recovery, and cognitive management are set up, your system takes longer to return to baseline. However, if the pattern is persistent, worsens, or is associated with significant symptoms (severe insomnia, intense anxiety, low mood, marked performance decline), it makes sense to talk to a healthcare professional.
Why do I feel tired even after “purely mental” activities?
Mental effort doesn’t just consume “energy”: it increases physiological arousal, requires attentional control, and triggers continuous micro-decisions. If stress stays active or if your brain is exposed to too many interruptions/ambiguity, the cost rises and recovery takes longer.
I sleep 7–8 hours but don’t recover: how is that possible?
The amount of sleep doesn’t always match the quality of recovery. Evening stress, rumination, irregular schedules, digital stimulation, alcohol, or accumulated recovery debt can reduce the restorative effect. Also, if cognitive load is very high, recovery may require daytime decompression and effective breaks as well.
Do the breaks I take (social media, videos, snacks) count as recovery?
It depends. Some breaks reduce effort but don’t lower arousal: they can keep the system stimulated and don’t help you return to baseline. The test helps distinguish between “interruption” and “recovery” by observing post-break signals (mental clarity, tension, irritability, return of attention).
What’s the difference between stress load and cognitive overload?
Stress load is about arousal (urgency, perceived threat, pressure, hypervigilance) and difficulty switching it off. Cognitive overload is about the amount/complexity of information and decisions, task switching, and fragmented attention. They can coexist, but they require different levers.
How reliable is this test?
It’s a self-analysis tool: reliable to the extent that you answer realistically and with reference to a defined period (2–4 weeks). It doesn’t replace clinical or diagnostic assessments. Its value is making patterns and imbalances visible so you can experiment with measurable changes.
How often should I repeat it?
If you’re changing habits (sleep, breaks, workload, notification management), repeat it after 2–3 weeks to see whether the axes move. If you want a stable snapshot, repeat it every 6–8 weeks.
