What this test analyzes

Measures the intensity and persistence of demands and stress reactivity (time pressure, conflicts, hyperarousal). A high score suggests that shoulder and neck tension is maintained by systemic activation, not just posture.
Estimates how inadequate recovery (sleep, breaks, decompression) is relative to the workload. A high score indicates that tension tends to become chronic because activation cycles don’t fully resolve.
Assesses attention fragmentation, multitasking, mental overload, and rumination. A high score suggests that stiffness is driven by constant self-monitoring, frequent micro-interruptions, and prolonged, immobile focus.

Why this test

Shoulder and neck stiffness isn’t just a “muscle problem.” It’s often an output of the system: how you allocate attention, how you recover, how you respond to stress, and how the body stabilizes (or stiffens) posture when demands exceed available resources.

This test does not replace a clinical assessment. It is designed to map patterns that tend to sustain tension over time: stress load, recovery debt, and cognitive overload. The goal is to increase precision and autonomy—to understand when and why tension switches on, and what keeps it going.

  • Recovery debt (axis_recovery_debt): sleep quality/quantity and breaks, your ability to “discharge” activation, and signs of accumulation.
  • Cognitive overload (axis_cognitive_overload): fragmented attention, multitasking, information noise, rumination, and mental control.

How to answer

Answer with the last 2 weeks in mind. If you’ve had an acute episode (e.g., the flu, moving house, unusually intense deadlines), also consider your “baseline” so you don’t overestimate.

If a question doesn’t apply, choose the closest option. Precision isn’t perfection—it’s consistency.

How to read the results (without oversimplifying)

Stiffness can be maintained by multiple mechanisms at the same time:

  • High stress: increased baseline muscle tone, faster breathing, reduced variability.
  • Insufficient recovery: the body doesn’t “close” activation cycles; tension becomes the default state.
  • Cognitive overload: micro-contractions and protective posture during prolonged tasks, with fragmented attention and constant self-monitoring.

The value of the test is identifying your mix and your early signals—the ones that show up before the muscle spasm.

When it’s wise not to delay

Frequently asked questions

Does this test tell me whether I have neck pain or a medical condition?
No. The test does not provide a diagnosis. It identifies behavioral and physiological patterns that often coexist with shoulder and neck stiffness (stress, insufficient recovery, cognitive overload). If you have neurological symptoms (persistent tingling, loss of strength), fever, trauma, or worsening night pain, you need a clinical evaluation.
Why does tension concentrate specifically in the traps and neck?
These are areas involved in postural “stabilization” and the stress response: when activation is high or prolonged, baseline muscle tone increases and breathing tends to become more upper-chest. At the same time, prolonged cognitive tasks (screens, decisions, monitoring/control) promote micro-contractions and stillness, which reduce local recovery.
What’s the difference between high stress and recovery debt?
High stress is about the amount/intensity of demands and your reactivity. Recovery debt is about not completing recovery cycles: unrefreshing sleep, ineffective breaks, difficulty “downshifting” your arousal. You can have moderate stress but poor recovery (persistent tension), or high stress but good recovery (more episodic tension).
Can cognitive overload really make the body stiff?
Yes—especially when attention is fragmented and the mind stays in control/monitoring mode. The body tends to brace: shoulders slightly raised, jaw clenched, more shallow breathing, fewer micro-movements. It’s not “psychological” in a dismissive sense: it’s a neurophysiological adaptation.
If the results indicate cognitive overload, do I need to reduce my workload?
Not necessarily. Often the lever isn’t “doing less,” but changing the structure: focus blocks, fewer interruptions, closing open loops, and breaks that truly lower activation (not just scrolling). The test helps you understand whether the tension comes from workload volume, fragmentation, or rumination.
How often should I repeat the test?
Every 2–4 weeks, or after a concrete change (new schedule, new responsibilities, changes in sleep, starting physical activity/therapy). Repeating it too often increases noise: stiffness has inertia and patterns change with some delay.
Can I use the test if I’m doing physiotherapy or training?
Yes. It can help you distinguish between local improvement (mobility/strength) and systemic maintaining factors (stress, recovery, overload). If the systemic scores remain high, relapse is more likely even with good muscular work.
